“Bhai, ek app banana hai, kitna lagega?”
We get this message all the time. Usually it’s followed by: “Simple app hai, Urban Company jaisa.”
Here’s the thing. Urban Company is not one app. It’s a customer app, a separate app for service partners, an admin panel to manage everything, payments, ratings, tracking, notifications and a support system. That’s at least three products.
So before we talk numbers, here’s what decides the cost of an app in India.
App development cost in India (2026)
| App type | Typical cost | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Simple app / MVP | ₹2 – ₹6 lakh | Booking app, catalogue app, single-user tool |
| Medium app | ₹6 – ₹15 lakh | Login, payments, admin panel, notifications, chat |
| Complex app | ₹15 – ₹40 lakh+ | Marketplace, live tracking, multiple user types |
These are typical market ranges in India. A quote outside these isn’t automatically wrong, but ask why.
The 6 things that decide your app’s price
1. Android, iPhone, or both?
Building separate native apps for Android and iOS nearly doubles the work. Most startups today use Flutter or React Native, where one codebase runs on both. That usually saves a big chunk of the budget.
2. Number of features
Login, profiles, search, filters, cart, payments, chat, push notifications, reviews, referrals. Each one adds time. Write your feature list before asking for quotes, then split it into “must have now” and “can wait.”
3. The admin panel
This is the most forgotten piece. Your users see the app, but you need a dashboard to manage orders, users, content and payments. That’s a separate web application, and it costs money. A school management system with a parent app, for example, is mostly admin panel: the office runs fees, attendance and report cards there, and the app shows parents the result.
4. Design
A ready UI kit is cheap. Custom design, with screens planned around how your users behave, costs more and is usually worth it.
5. Third-party services
Payment gateways, Google Maps, SMS OTP, email and video calling. Most of these charge per use, so they become running costs.
6. Who builds it
Developer rates in India vary a lot by experience and city. Cheaper per hour isn’t cheaper overall if the app has to be rebuilt later. Our custom software development company page lists nine questions to compare teams.
Costs after the app is built
Many founders budget for building the app and forget about running it.
- Google Play developer account: one-time $25
- Apple developer account: $99 a year
- Servers and database: grow with your users
- SMS OTP, maps and other APIs: pay-per-use
- Maintenance and updates: Android and iOS update every year, and your app has to keep up. A common rule of thumb is to keep 15–20% of the build cost aside each year.
How to build an app without burning your budget
Start with an MVP, a minimum viable product. Build only the features that prove people want the app, launch it to real users, learn, then add more. We break down what that costs in MVP development cost in India.
We’ve seen founders spend ₹20 lakh building every feature they could imagine, then discover users only cared about two of them. We’ve also seen founders launch a ₹4 lakh MVP, get paying customers within months, and fund version two with that revenue.
The second path is less exciting. It works far more often.
Many business apps don’t need to start from scratch either. A gym owner who wants a member app, for instance, usually gets more from gym management software with a simple member app on top than from a big custom app built first.
How to get an honest quote
Send every agency the same document:
- What the app does, in 5–6 lines
- Who uses it (customers, staff, admin)
- Your feature list, marked must-have or later
- Android, iOS or both
- Any apps you like the look of
Ask for a feature-wise breakdown, not one lump sum. If an agency can’t tell you what each part costs, they haven’t really understood your app.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to build an app in India?
An MVP usually takes 6–12 weeks. Medium apps take 3–5 months. Complex apps take 6 months or more.
Is Flutter good enough for a serious app?
For most business and startup apps, yes. It runs on Android and iOS from one codebase and performs well.
Can I build an app for under ₹1 lakh?
Only a very basic app, or one built on no-code tools. That can be a smart way to test an idea before investing more.
